Nia Shanks. She’s strong. She’s beautiful. She’s real. She’s empowering. She lifts like a girl.
This is our first podcast for the Miss Strong interview series, and today we want to introduce you to Nia Shanks. Nia is the creator of the website Lift Like A Girl and leader of the Beautiful Badass revolution, and was also recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in health in fitness in 2012 and 2013! Shape.com has rated Nia one of the top 30 motivators of 2013 and her health and fitness writings have been featured on Bodybuilding.com, in Experience Life Magazine, and EliteFTS. Nia really focuses on being real and eliminating all of the BS in the fitness world, and that’s what Miss Strong is about as well. She’s a personal trainer, a motivator, and the author of numerous ebooks and successful training and nutrition plans. She’s an advocate for wholesome living, a believer in honesty, and an incredible role model for countless women in the fitness industry. Here’s to the Beautiful Badass revolution.
Here’s the simple deal. There are a lot of misleading diets, training programs and rules created out there in the fitness industry. We’re always being told how we should eat with specific meal plan play by plays, and how much we should run on the treadmill everyday. When weeks go by and we realize that the plan we’ve been following really hasn’t made any difference, we get upset. Being handed a strict training and diet plan is easy, and we don’t have to be held responsible for our own training decisions! But this is not sane, simple, or the way to become a beautiful badass. It creates a vicious cycle of exhaustion, frustration, and negativity. So what’s the right way? Everyone always claims that they’ve found the right way to train and eat…who is right?! Nia teaches us that it really isn’t complicated, and that there is no secret. Being fit is very simple.
In this podcast interview, Nia discusses what it means to lift like a girl, what the “Sane and Simple” approach is, and how to keep everything simple while setting goals and obtaining optimal results through sustainability. She highlights ditching the scales, not counting calories, and doing things that are enjoyable. And yes…that includes eating a bowl of ice cream. She knows what she’s talking about.
Nia Shanks: “I don’t want women going through what I went through. I don’t want them stressing about food from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to sleep at night. I don’t want them revolving their life around a gym, because there are more important things in our life then just looking awesome.”
Miss Strong finds extreme motivation in Nia’s work, and we hope you do too. Let’s celebrate a balanced and honest woman. She’s a beautiful badass, and reveals how you can discover your beautiful badass, too.
